The only operational lacrosse team in Slovakia, the Tricksters Bratislava has recorded the first-ever victory in its short history. Tricksters beat the Czech team LK Kroměříž 4:3. The match was a climax of a lacrosse camp that Tricksters attended in Czech Republic. Under the guidance of coaches from the national team of Czech Republic, we were trained in all aspects of the game, defensive as well as offensive schemes and learned a lot of new. The Czechs has already attended World Championships and are host to lacrosse competitions of various levels,” says March Lichtner from team Tricksters that is getting ready for a big international event in Radotín (23rd – 26th of April). “Recently, we managed to recruit a very good goalie and now we have 10 regulars at each practice session. Over the winter the emphasis was placed mainly on fitness and strength, since box-lacrosse can sometimes be harder than hockey.”
Box-lacrosse is played with 5 players in the field and a goalkeeper. The other form is field-lacrosse that is played on football pitch with 9 field players and a goalie. The youngest and softest form is called intercrosse, played with a plastic sticks, also playable indoors. All of these forms have one common goal – to get a small ball in the back of opponent’s net. Players can catch, pass and carry the ball in a pocket with durable mesh attached to the top of a lacrosse stick. All forms have evolved from an ancient Indian game that has roots in North America and dates back to centuries ago when it was played by indigenous people from around the Great Lakes. The game was called bagattaway and existed as a means of resolving territorial disputes.
Since February, Tricksters LT and Vienna Monarchs are the two co-founding teams of Danube Lacrosse Conference. Under the DLC framework, both teams will play each other at their home grounds and will also be able to invite teams from abroad to participate. The first tournament in Bratislava is likely to be held this fall.
