Tricksters Bratislava again with a medal
Year met year and Tricksters again went to the tournament in Budapest, where the traditional lacrosse tournament Budapest New Years cup was held. This tournament has been held for the 13th time and Tricksters Bratislava players participated in all of them.
After the original schedule of matches, we expected a difficult group, but after the Bulgarian national team canceled its participation, the entire playing format was reworked and our matches were even more difficult. In the tournament, we were supposed to play against the English team Silly Sparrows, BeerPreassure (a mix of players from Europe) and finally the Swiss Olten Saints. All top teams in the tournament.
The first Friday match against the English gave us a so-called real slap in the face, as it showed us that it won't work without team spirit. After many expulsions, we lost the match 11:1 due to our own irresponsibility.
The second Friday match of the tournament was against the mixed team BeerPreassure, which we started well, we were leading, but our nature showed again when we brought a clearly winning match to a real drama. The opponent tied from 7:3 to 7:7 again after our eliminations and even managed to score an 8th goal, which would have meant their lead. However, then a stick check was requested by coach Lichtner, who noticed that the opponent's best scorer (later declared the tournament MVP) had an irregular lacrosse. The referees agreed with him and the score returned to 7:7. Then we managed to score a goal again and the course of the match showed that we were victorious. The goal scorers were successful in this match, especially Furesz, who scored 6 out of 8 goals.
On Saturday, after the victory of BeerPressure, we were under pressure, if we wanted to play for a medal, we had to defeat the previously undefeated Olten Saints in the last match. To everyone's surprise, the Tricksters managed to do it and won quite clearly 10:4. Thanks to the win over the Swiss team, our boys secured a place among the top 4 teams of the tournament and in the semi-finals they played against the Polish team Cebulax.
From the beginning, the Tricksters went for the victory. They almost did not allow their opponent anything and finally won 9:5. The victory meant advancing to the final of the tournament in which our boys were to meet the English birds again.
The final match was a little different than the opening match of these two teams. Tricksters led, later tied at 2:2, then the English took control of the match again, who managed to score a few goals and regain their lost confidence. Silly Sparrows finally won over Tricksters 9:3, but nevertheless the whole team should be congratulated. With a rejuvenated squad, which included 4 players who played in the tournament for the first time and two who have been playing lacrosse for only 2 months, we managed an unprecedented feat.
Thanks go to the whole team, the guys who stood on the bench, and those who sacrificed their health for a better result for our beloved Tricksters lacrosse club.
